The essentials of playing Reaction Challenge

Bring your attention to one round of Reaction Challenge. Finish five valid responses. An early click does not count as a completed response; start that attempt again. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

An idea for your next attempt

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Refer to the controls when needed.

The objective of a round

Finish five valid responses. An early click does not count as a completed response; start that attempt again. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Making your moves

  1. Start a round and wait without clicking.
  2. When GO appears, click or tap the large target.
  3. Read your response time and start the next round.
  4. After five rounds, the game shows the mean time.

Input guidance

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

An example before you play

A valid 250 ms response counts. Clicking during WAIT is too early and must be repeated. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Keep this in mind

Browser scheduling, screen refresh and input hardware can affect the measurement. It is not a medical test. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
