Find your footing in Reversi

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Reversi. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Look at what changes after your first action. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Look at what changes after your first action.

Bring this focus to a round

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

Understand the aim

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

How to proceed

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

How to interact with the game

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Put the rules into context

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. Compare the situation with the worked example. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
