The essentials of playing Peg Solitaire

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Peg Solitaire. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Practice beyond the first move

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

From the start of a round

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.
