Shikaku: what to know before playing

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Shikaku. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Look at what changes after your first action. Check the rule that explains your first action. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

Something to practise

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Refer to the controls when needed.

What you need to achieve

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Keep the controls in easy reach.

The playing sequence

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

Your inputs

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

Put the rules into context

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. Check the rule before repeating the action. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
